GLOOMY WINTER

Many thanks to Miles of Smiles for having Rafe Fitzpatrick, Stevie Jones and Alasdair Roberts play with Trembling Bells and Shirley Collins on 30th October. It was a most enjoyable evening.

Alasdair is joining some of the Second Hand Marching Band folks for some Robert Tannahill songs at Stereo, Glasgow on 4th November. They are playing on the same bill as Iceland’s Benni Hemm Hemm, with whom Alasdair collaborated earlier this year on some of Benni’s Icelandic/English compositions.

Next Roberts solo gig – 8th November at Union Chapel in London with the United States of America’s own Carolina Chocolate Drops – check out the trio’s albums Genuine Negro Jig and Heritage for a taster.

Then mid-November sees him touring solo in the land of the Englishman with the fine Newcastle-based American (she)/English (he) duo Cath and Phil Tyler (thanks to No-Fi for these dates). Cath and Phil’s tremendous recent album The Hind Wheels of Bad Luck, featuring a mixture of traditional and self-written material, is available now on No-Fi Records. Recommended!

Alasdair is delighted to announce his involvement in David McGuinness’s ‘Revenge of the Folksingers’ project in Snape, Suffolk in late November/early December, culminating in a concert on 5th December. The project features many fine collaborators – to mention but a few: Concerto Caledonia, Bill Taylor, Clare Salaman, Olivia Chaney, Susie LeBlanc and Martin Carthy.

Meanwhile, getting to grips with Sibelius (the software, not the towering Finnish composer).
